Rostam and Sa’ad Beneath the Rock
From E10.4, Rostam Battles Sa’ad and Is Slain. It illustrates E10.4.14–25:
- E10.4.14Then Sa’ad’s shout and Rostam’s roar were heard,And through the shaken field the armies stirred.
- E10.4.15Each left his army’s center and withdrew,And from the crowded field apart they drew.
- E10.4.16They reached the shadow of a rocky height,And there the chieftains joined in single fight.
- E10.4.17There Rostam roared like thunder in the sky,And made his blade at Sa’ad’s charger fly.
- E10.4.18He struck the charger’s head with such great forceThat Sa’ad fell, flung from his crashing horse.
- E10.4.19Then Rostam raised his sharpened blade to showThe day of Doom to his unhorsed foe.
- E10.4.20He meant to strike off Sa’ad’s head, but thenThe dust obscured the sight of both the men.
- E10.4.21Then Rostam left his charger’s saddle-seat,And stood beside his charger on his feet.
- E10.4.22He bound the courser’s rein about his waist,While blinding desert dust his eyes embraced.
- E10.4.23Then Sa’ad rushed to strike him in that place,And struck his helm; blood streamed across his face.
- E10.4.24As blood obscured his sight, the Arab’s powerPrevailed against him in that desperate hour.
- E10.4.25His next blow struck the chest and neck instead,And cast the mighty Pahlevan down dead.
