Yazdegard Leaves Baghdad
From E10.5, Yazdegard Withdraws to Khorasan. It illustrates E10.5.46–57 (to E10.5.62):
- E10.5.46He stayed that night; and when the morning shone,The nobles left Baghdad with many a groan.
- E10.5.47He set his face toward Khorasan’s plain,And counted little all the road and pain.
- E10.5.48The chieftains of Iran, with sorrow bowed,Accompanied their Shah among the crowd.
- E10.5.49They blessed him, saying, “May the earth and timeStill know your royal presence in its prime.”
- E10.5.50The army wailed with grief to see him go;Landholders, high-born men, came in their woe.
- E10.5.51“If we should lose our Shah, how can the heartFind joy in home or country set apart?
- E10.5.52We leave our homes, our children, and our gold,To share your burdens on the road you hold.
- E10.5.53Without your throne our lives are nothing worth;May Fortune never cast you from the earth.
- E10.5.54We all will go and wait for Time to showWhat games it plays amid the battle’s flow.”
- E10.5.55Then eloquent Iranians, face to ground,Spoke from the dust, with grief in every sound:
- E10.5.56“We left our thriving homes and thought to findThe world beneath your shelter, safe and kind.
- E10.5.57Now, broken-hearted, to the Khan we go;From Iran toward Turan, weighed down with woe.”
