Halted at the Flooded Trench
From E4.2, Anooshirvan and the Shoemaker. It illustrates E4.2.10–15:
- E4.2.10The Romans dug a trench to block the way,And flooded it to keep the Shah at bay.
- E4.2.11They barred the Shah’s advance with ditch and flood; His army halted there in steel and blood.
- E4.2.12A long time passed with neither side relieved; The troops required more funds than they received.
- E4.2.13He called his battle-captains to his side,And weighed the field’s condition far and wide.
- E4.2.14He said, “This brings us toil and loss; no wayAcross the flooded trench appears today.
- E4.2.15The troops need coin, food, steeds, and jowshans too,And Roman helms, if we would see this through.”
