Zardosht Visits the Prisoner
From E5.2, Hormizd’s Slaughter of the Ministers. It illustrates E5.2.31–39:
- E5.2.31Then on an Arab steed the priest arose,And rode himself toward prison and its woes.
- E5.2.32The jailer paled with terror when he sawThe priest approach, and stood in silent awe.
- E5.2.33Yet none dared say, “Do not now come inside; The king is young, self-willed, and drunk with pride.”
- E5.2.34The aged man, with tears upon his face,Dismounted there and entered that dark place.
- E5.2.35He found Izad Gashasp in prison’s gloom; They clasped and wept within that narrow room.
- E5.2.36Their lashes seemed like clouds of springtime rain,As each embraced the other in his pain.
- E5.2.37They spoke about the evil Shah at length,Until their bitter words had spent their strength.
- E5.2.38Then food was spread before those holy men; They said the baj, as was their custom then.
- E5.2.39With barsom twigs in hand, they prayed to God,The righteous Judge beyond the tyrant’s rod.
