Bahram Azarmihan Denounces Simah Barzin
From E5.2, Hormizd’s Slaughter of the Ministers. It illustrates E5.2.99–110 (to E5.2.113):
- E5.2.99King Hormizd sat upon the ivory throne;Above his head the costly crown was shown.
- E5.2.100The chiefs of Iran gathered at the gate,And came in ordered ranks before the state.
- E5.2.101The chamberlain withdrew the curtain fair,And all the throng approached with courtly care.
- E5.2.102First came Bahram Azarmihan in place,With Simah Barzin and the chiefs of grace.
- E5.2.103Each took his seat according to his right; The crowd stood waiting in the monarch’s sight.
- E5.2.104The monarch questioned Bahram in that hall:“Does Simah Barzin merit wealth at all?
- E5.2.105Or does he harbor evil in his heart? The ill-disposed deserve no royal part.”
- E5.2.106Bahram discerned the purpose of the king,And knew the grief his questioning would bring.
- E5.2.107He thought, “We all must weep for this design; At last my grave will lack both cloth and sign.”
- E5.2.108He answered, “Shah, from Simah comes no gain; His deeds have brought this land to grief and pain.
- E5.2.109He wrecked Iran; may flesh and skin be flayed,His senseless body in the dust be laid.
- E5.2.110His speech is nothing else but lies and spite,And every word breeds enmity and fight.”
