The Signet Ring Tossed in Air
From E5.24, Bahram Chubin Reveals His Ambition. It illustrates E5.24.53–57:
- E5.24.53Bahram then turned to Bahram, wise in thought,His prudent friend, whose counsel had been sought.
- E5.24.54“What say you of this quest for wealth and state? Will royal greatness come, or grief await?”
- E5.24.55He laughed to hear them weigh so grave a thing,Then tossed into the air his signet-ring:
- E5.24.56“As long as this gold ring remains in air,So long a subject may the diadem wear!”
- E5.24.57The captain frowned: “You make the crown too small; It is no trivial honor, once for all!”
