Gurdiyeh Breaks into the Council
From E5.24, Bahram Chubin Reveals His Ambition. It illustrates E5.24.28–38:
- E5.24.28Behind the chamber veil, concealed from eyes,There dwelt his sister, prudent, brave, and wise:
- E5.24.29Fair Gurdiyeh, endowed with noble grace,Whom Bahram cherished for her mind and face.
- E5.24.30When from behind the veil she heard his speech,Her anger flared beyond the bounds of reach.
- E5.24.31She joined the council, tears upon her cheek,Her tongue like arrows, sharpened now to speak.
- E5.24.32Her cheeks were gold with grief, her heart distressed;Old words and grievances weighed on her breast.
- E5.24.33Her brother, when he heard her voice, grew still; No answer rose against her forceful will.
- E5.24.34The Iranians, too, were silent in that place,For fear of harm was written on each face.
- E5.24.35Then Gurdiyeh addressed the warrior train:“Illustrious men, why hold your tongues in chain?
- E5.24.36You seek for guidance, yet your lips are sealed; Why must your anger still be kept concealed?
- E5.24.37You are Iran’s great chieftains, brave and wise,The foremost lords beneath the turning skies.
- E5.24.38What do you see within this bloody game? What course can save your honor and your name?”
