The Omen of the Sheep's Head

The Omen of the Sheep's Head

From E5.7, Bahram Chubin Rides against Saveh. It illustrates E5.7.25–33:

  • E5.7.25
As Bahram rode out from Tisfoon’s domain,He led his chosen force across the plain.
  • E5.7.26
A seller with a basket came ahead,With sheep heads on its cloth for sale outspread.
  • E5.7.27
A clean cloth lay across the basket’s rim;The seller bore it on in front of him.
  • E5.7.28
The chieftain spurred his horse and lowered his spear,Then raised a sheep’s head high for all those near.
  • E5.7.29
He bore it high before the army’s view,Then cast it down, convinced the sign was true.
  • E5.7.30
He said, “Thus shall I sever Saveh’s head,And cast it where his army’s lines are spread.
  • E5.7.31
So shall I shatter all his gathered pride,And scatter Saveh’s troops on every side.”
  • E5.7.32
The Shah’s emissary read the omen too:“This favorite of fortune will break through.
  • E5.7.33
When he has brought his warlike task to an end,Against the Shah himself his will shall bend.”
