Swords Drawn in Bahram's Council
From E6.11, Bahram Chubin Claims the Throne. It illustrates E6.11.62–73 (to E6.11.75):
- E6.11.62He sat and wept; his eyes were washed in grief,While sullen silence seized on every chief.
- E6.11.63Bahram grew pale; then Sambaz took his stand,A veteran with Indian sword in hand.
- E6.11.64Before the gathered chiefs, the elder cried:“This noble Pahlevan stands justified.
- E6.11.65Until one born of royal race shall rise,And claim the realm before the nation’s eyes,
- E6.11.66He should now take the royal crown and reign,Since conquering Fortune marks him for that gain.”
- E6.11.67Bahram, chief of warriors, heard him through,And from its sheath his sharpened sword he drew.
- E6.11.68He cried, “If in this quarter we should findA woman of the royal Shahs’ own kind,
- E6.11.69My sharpened sword shall strike her head away; Her final breath shall rise that very day.
- E6.11.70I will let no one rule this ancient land,Or ride as king amid a mounted band.”
- E6.11.71When chiefs possessed by Ahriman had heardTheir leader’s foul and overweening word,
- E6.11.72They drew their scimitars and rose as one,And uttered monstrous words beneath the sun:
- E6.11.73“Bahram is Shah; we serve him and shall treadUpon our foes and crush each hostile head.”
