Chubin Cuts Down Young Bahram on the Polo Ground
From E6.12, The Plot against Bahram Chubin. It illustrates E6.12.37–47:
- E6.12.37His jowshan brought, he drew it to his side,Then hid it under robes and went to ride.
- E6.12.38The warrior’s wife was wicked, false of heart; She loved Chubin and played a traitor’s part.
- E6.12.39She wished her spouse cut down and left to die,While love for Chubin burned within her eye.
- E6.12.40She sent this secret warning to his ear:“O helpful chief, take heed; a threat is near.
- E6.12.41Bahram conceals a jowshan in his robe; What evil he intends, I cannot probe.
- E6.12.42Keep far from him; do not join him in play;Whatever harm he plans, keep well away.”
- E6.12.43Chubin touched each back gently, keen to feelBeneath the robes the hidden links of steel.
- E6.12.44He greeted each with courteous words of cheer; At last the son of Siavash drew near.
- E6.12.45He found him mailed beneath his silken gear,And spoke with wrath for all the court to hear:
- E6.12.46“O viler than a snake! What man is foundIn jowshan under silk on polo-ground?”
- E6.12.47He drew his vengeful scimitar; one strokeCut young Bahram through jowshan and through cloak.
