The Arab Kais Feeds the Exiles
From E6.13, The Hermit’s Prophecy to Khosrow. It illustrates E6.13.13–24 (to E6.13.26):
- E6.13.13Then they beheld a wood and water bright,And on its grass the Shah bade them alight.
- E6.13.14They strung a bow and sought for game to eat,But found no living quarry for their meat.
- E6.13.15A caravan appeared, a laden train;A cameleer led on across the plain.
- E6.13.16The youth beheld Khosrow and blessed his name,And honored him for farr and royal fame.
- E6.13.17The noble Shah asked, “Tell me who you are,Your trade, and from what land you come so far.”
- E6.13.18He said, “I am Kais, Haris’ noble son,Heir to Arab chiefs by lineage won.
- E6.13.19From Mesr I came with caravan and gear;I am its chief and foremost cameleer.
- E6.13.20Beside the Farat’s waters I abide,And from that home I came to this wood’s side.”
- E6.13.21Khosrow asked, “What food have you to share,And rugs to spread? Our stores and gear are bare.”
- E6.13.22The Arab answered, “Stay; I stand with you,With body, soul, and goods, devoted, true.”
- E6.13.23He loved the Shah and brought a fatted cow; They slaughtered her beside the forest bough.
- E6.13.24They kindled fire from sticks both green and dry,And sent the smoke ascending to the sky.
