The Storm Breaks the Walls of Karsan
From E6.13, The Hermit’s Prophecy to Khosrow. It illustrates E6.13.61–72:
- E6.13.61They reached the fortress of Karsan at last,Whose Christian wardens made the portals fast;
- E6.13.62They barred the gates in terror and surprise,And watched the strangers with suspicious eyes.
- E6.13.63Within, they shot the bolts and stood aghast;The Shah remained outside, his heart downcast.
- E6.13.64The royal exile waited, sore distressed,Three days outside, with hungry troops hard-pressed.
- E6.13.65Upon the fourth he sent a man to say:“Our troops are few and worn upon the way.
- E6.13.66We have not come to fight against this town;Do not let hunger wear our people down.
- E6.13.67Send provender and relief in our need;Do not oppose us with so harsh a deed.”
- E6.13.68They scorned his words; his troops were weak and worn,Their strength by hunger and exhaustion torn.
- E6.13.69Then suddenly a murky cloud arose,And roared like a war-lion at its foes.
- E6.13.70A storm swept over that embattled place;From every quarter rose a cry for grace.
- E6.13.71By midnight part of its great walls fell down;Amazement seized the people of the town.
- E6.13.72The bishop prayed; they gathered food in fear,From every quarter, and drew quickly near.
