Bahram Chubin Cleaves Kut the Roman
From E6.24, Khosrow Battles Bahram Chubin. It illustrates E6.24.33–40:
- E6.24.33Kut sped back like the wind with spear in hand,A maddened elephant, he stormed the land.
- E6.24.34Then Yalan-sina warned, his meaning clear:“Brave rider, guard yourself; the Div draws near.
- E6.24.35A Div with lance in hand has come this way,His kamand at the saddle, primed for fray.”
- E6.24.36Bahram drew sword, with fury in his mind,Proclaimed his name, and left all fear behind.
- E6.24.37The Shah rose on the mountain’s lofty brow,Wet-eyed and angry, watching what came now.
- E6.24.38The Roman charged with lance; Bahram held fast,And let the thrusting spear go harmless past.
- E6.24.39Behind his shield, Bahram struck neck and head,And split him to the breast; the steel ran red.
- E6.24.40The sword-clash reached Khosrow upon the height; He laughed to see Bahram’s tremendous might.
