Kulun Strikes Bahram Chubin
From E6.37, Bahram Falls by Kharrad’s Design. It illustrates E6.37.62–69:
- E6.37.62Bahram replied, “Let him stand near the door,And show his face before he tells me more.”
- E6.37.63Kulun drew near; within the doorway’s space,He showed his head, his poor and aged face.
- E6.37.64When Bahram saw that wretched, feeble man,He said, “Show any letter, if you can.”
- E6.37.65Kulun replied, “I bear these words alone; No other ear may hear what I was shown.”
- E6.37.66Bahram said, “Come nearer; end this doubt;Speak in my ear and let the tale come out.”
- E6.37.67Kulun drew close, the knife beneath his sleeve,His vengeful heart prepared to strike and leave.
- E6.37.68He feigned a whisper, bent as if to speak,Then struck the navel, laying Bahram weak!
- E6.37.69A cry rose from the chamber into air;The people rushed to him in dread and care.
