Khosrow Laughs and Turns His Rein
From E6.5, Khosrow and Bahram Parley. It illustrates E6.5.274–281:
- E6.5.274Bahram replied: “You shepherd-born disgrace,Sprung from a herdsman of ignoble race!
- E6.5.275Did Babak not bid Sasan take his crook,To tend his ewes beside the mountain brook?”
- E6.5.276Khosrow replied: “Falsehood procures no crown;Such slanders drag your warrior honor down!
- E6.5.277You spring from crooked roots; yet Sasan’s breadEnriched your house and raised your father’s head!”
- E6.5.278Bahram retorted: “Though your words be bold,A shepherd’s crook was Sasan’s lot of old!”
- E6.5.279Khosrow said: “When King Dara breathed his last,To noble Sasan was the kingship passed!
- E6.5.280Though Fortune waned, the royal seed remained;By lies no sovereign title is attained!
- E6.5.281With such blind judgment, would you govern men?”He laughed in scorn, and turned his rein again.
