Khosrow Sleeps at the House of God

Khosrow Sleeps at the House of God

From E6.9, Bahram’s Pursuit and Bandvi’s Rescue. It illustrates E6.9.14–22:

  • E6.9.14
Then Khosrow said, “Blessed elder, tell me plain:Have you no wine to ease the heart of pain?”
  • E6.9.15
The bishop said, “We make clear wine from dates; But little now remains within our gates.
  • E6.9.16
Like rosewater it shines, both pure and bright,And red as garnet in the shining light.”
  • E6.9.17
He brought a cup whose color struck the eye,And dimmed the hue of Sol within the sky.
  • E6.9.18
Khosrow drank three, then barley-bread he ate,While grief and wine contended with his fate.
  • E6.9.19
When ruddy wine had warmed his weary head,He slept where soft sand made his troubled bed.
  • E6.9.20
His head lay on Bandvi’s lap in trust,His soul grief-pierced, his fortune turned to dust.
  • E6.9.21
Just as he slept, the bishop, old and wise,Came near and spoke of what had met his eyes.
  • E6.9.22
“Black clouds of dust have risen on the way;Behind them comes an armed and vast array.”
