The Letter on the Envoy's Arm
From E7.10, Shiruyeh Is Released. It illustrates E7.10.20–28:
- E7.10.20A Roman patrician saw him on the road,And seized him with the letter and its load.
- E7.10.21They brought him straight to Caesar, dust on head,With pallid cheeks and lips like livid lead.
- E7.10.22Then Caesar asked, “Where does Parviz remain?Speak truth, and make your answer clear and plain.”
- E7.10.23The envoy stood bewildered in that place,And fear drew down the features of his face.
- E7.10.24Then Caesar said, “Search him, this man of ill,With wicked speech and thoughts and evil will.”
- E7.10.25Shrewd men searched all his garments, arm, and hand,And found the letter tied beneath its band.
- E7.10.26They sought a learned man to read the scroll,Whose Pahlavi would yield its meaning whole.
- E7.10.27The scribe read out the letter, word by word;Like pitch grew Caesar’s face at what he heard.
- E7.10.28Within his heart he spoke in deep disdain:“Guraz has drawn us toward a deadly chain.
