The Horsemen Turn Back from the King
From E7.11, Shiruyeh Sends Khosrow to Tisfoon. It illustrates E7.11.31–42:
- E7.11.31The gardener answered, “In the garden’s shade,A man in jowshan sits there, fearless, staid.
- E7.11.32He holds a bow, a tall and royal sight; His spring-bright cheeks make all the garden bright.
- E7.11.33His jowshan shines like sun across the field;A branch above him bears his golden shield.
- E7.11.34Before him stood a servant, girdle bound,Who cut this piece with gems set all around.
- E7.11.35He handed it to me and bade me goTo market for bread and meat, avoiding show.
- E7.11.36Swift as the wind, I left him there just now.”Shiruyeh knew Khosrow by that shape and brow.
- E7.11.37He sent three hundred horsemen out in force,Who raced toward the garden on their course.
- E7.11.38When Khosrow saw them coming from afar,He paled and drew his keen-edged scimitar.
- E7.11.39But when they saw the king of kings arrayedIn jowshan, back they turned, in tears, dismayed.
- E7.11.40They went to Zad Farrokh and said in shame:“We are but slaves; he bears the royal name.
- E7.11.41He is Khosrow Parviz, our rightful king,Whom this black day has stripped of everything.
- E7.11.42No man in garden or in battle-frayWould dare affront him in the slightest way.”
