Khosrow Led Away on the Elephant
From E7.11, Shiruyeh Sends Khosrow to Tisfoon. It illustrates E7.11.57–65:
- E7.11.57He said, “This armor now is earth to me,My golden shield the heaven I can see.
- E7.11.58The mountains are these garden treasures bright,That filled my heart, as lamps fill rooms with light.
- E7.11.59In truth my days are drawing to their end;Where is my star that once made worlds attend?
- E7.11.60Where are the peace and joy that once were mine?Where are the crowns on which my name would shine?”
- E7.11.61They brought an elephant; his soul was dark,And sorrow quenched in him its royal spark.
- E7.11.62He mounted, and the troops led him away;In Pahlavi he cried aloud that day:
- E7.11.63“O treasure, if you have become my foe,Be not a friend to those who bring me low.
- E7.11.64Today I stand in Ahriman’s command; You do not help me in this hostile land.
- E7.11.65Conceal yourself and show yourself to none;Let not my foes rejoice in what is done.”
