Tus, Giv and Rohham Ringed by Night
From B13.14, The Iranians Make a Night-Attack, Tus, Giv, Rohham Are Surrounded but Are Saved. It illustrates B13.14.27–38 (to B13.14.43):
- B13.14.27The karnay rang; the ranks pressed on ahead,And ringed the horsemen, filling them with dread.
- B13.14.28Iran’s riders, raging lions, stood at bay,While foes closed round, and none could break away.
- B13.14.29Sparks flashed from helm and sword through murky air;It seemed the clouds rained heavy gorz everywhere.
- B13.14.30Night, dust, and scimitars concealed the light,No star was seen; the moon was veiled from sight.
- B13.14.31It seemed a wall of jowshan hemmed them round,A sea of pitch had swallowed sky and ground.
- B13.14.32Then Houman cried: “Bring chiefs as captives; striveTo let no arrow wound them; take them alive.”
- B13.14.33They shouted back: “Their hands we bind, or allBeneath our gopal and our zhupin fall.
- B13.14.34Crown every chief of Iran with blood-red gore;Let blood become the crown that each one wore.”
- B13.14.35Then Tus said to Rohham and Giv: “Our livesAre lost unless Yazdan our strength revives,
- B13.14.36And frees both soul and body from this net,And guards us from the ruin round us set.
- B13.14.37We hang like prey within an eagle’s clutch,Or sink beneath the sea beyond all touch.”
- B13.14.38Like savage lions springing to the fray,They charged together, sweeping foes away.
