Rostam Rebukes Piran on the Field
From B14.9, Rostam Rebukes Piran. It illustrates B14.9.28–39 (to B14.9.40):
- B14.9.28They do not know you; ‘Sagzi’ is the nameThey give you, knowing nothing of your fame.
- B14.9.29Yet I am sure this band will weep, downcast,When Rostam’s storm of vengeance has swept past.”
- B14.9.30When Rostam heard, his wrath became a flame; He cried, “Ill-fated man, you merit shame!
- B14.9.31Why are you steeped in treachery and lies? Why walk where ruin yawns before your eyes?
- B14.9.32The king of earth named your treachery clear,Apart from courtiers, where none else could hear.
- B14.9.33I see your wisdom now, your vaunted art:From head to foot, all falsehood, every part.
- B14.9.34You wallow heedlessly in blood, your own;Worse waits ahead than all that you have known.
- B14.9.35Whether your land is Hell or Paradise,Recall the words I offered as advice:
- B14.9.36I told you, ‘Leave this black and evil land,And choose a settled realm by wisdom planned.
- B14.9.37Such life is worthless; look upon its cause;Your head lies in the Dragon’s grinding jaws.
- B14.9.38You might behold our Shah, so young and fair,Just, gracious, loving, gentle in his care.’
- B14.9.39But boar and leopard skins you choose to wearSeem sweeter than bright diba, rich and rare.
