The Pahlevans Plead with the Shah
From C4.48, The Court Is Closed to the Nobles. It illustrates C4.48.5–16 (to C4.48.22):
- C4.48.5The lion-like chiefs who made great tuskers fallWith folded arms advanced into the hall.
- C4.48.6Tus, Gudarz, gallant Giv, and Gorgin came,Rohham the Lion, Bijan known to fame.
- C4.48.7They saw the Shah, bowed low with reverence due,Then told him what their inward thoughts held true:
- C4.48.8“O Shah, brave hero, judge of great and small,O ruler of the world, chief over all,
- C4.48.9No Shah like you the ivory throne has known; The sun and crown draw light from you alone.
- C4.48.10You honor steed and jowshan, sword so brightAnd give Azargashasp a fresher light.
- C4.48.11You fear no toil, nor boast about your treasure;Your labors far exceed your wealth in measure.
- C4.48.12We Pahlevans are all your servants true,Our lives are quickened by the sight of you.
- C4.48.13You crushed your enemies into the dust;No foe remains to trouble royal trust.
- C4.48.14All troops and treasures of the world are yours;Wherever you set foot, your toil endures.
- C4.48.15We know no reason why the Shah’s high mindHas grown so dark, so inwardly confined.
- C4.48.16This is your season to enjoy your worth,Not sink in sorrow while you rule the earth.
