Young Yazdegard Takes the Crown
From E10.1, Yazdegard Ascends the Throne. It illustrates E10.1.15–23:
- E10.1.15When Yazdegard upon the throne was placed,The crown of kings his youthful forehead graced.
- E10.1.16He said, “From Shahryar my line descends,And to Anooshirvan its glory bends.
- E10.1.17From sire to sire, the crown is mine to wear; The Sun and Virgo, Pisces, are my share.
- E10.1.18I shall advance the great and do no wrongTo lesser men who in my realm belong.
- E10.1.19I shall seek greatness, wisdom, manly might,And war’s fierce ardor in the thick of fight.
- E10.1.20For strength and Fortune stay with none at all,All treasure, kingship, crown, and throne must fall.
- E10.1.21Fame will abide forever, not desire;Cast pleasure off, and raise your honor higher.
- E10.1.22By fame a man shall live beyond his breath,Though his body lies in the dust of death.”
- E10.1.23The chiefs applauded him with one accord,And hailed him as the earth’s acknowledged lord.
