Yazdegard Abandoned on the Field
From E10.9, Yazdegard Hides in the Mill. It illustrates E10.9.19–30 (to E10.9.33):
- E10.9.19The Shah knew nothing of the ambush set,Nor that Mahwi Suri had spread the net.
- E10.9.20The shouts arose; at dawn a horseman came,And spoke to Yazdegard in Mahwi’s name:
- E10.9.21“Mahwi declares: ‘The Turks are gathered here; What bidding has the Shah for us to hear?
- E10.9.22The Khan and Faghfoor’s captain leads the horde; Its weight is more than earth can bear, my lord.’”
- E10.9.23The Shah in rage donned jowshan, set to ride; The armies now approached from either side.
- E10.9.24He ranged the center, left and right in line,Then all advanced beneath the battle sign.
- E10.9.25Spear in his hand, he held the center ground,While clouds of dust obscured the world around.
- E10.9.26He saw the Turks engage with heated breath,Unsheathed his sword, and moved like marching death.
- E10.9.27He charged, an elephant in wrath and might;Earth surged like Nile beneath him in the fight.
- E10.9.28He charged the Turkish ranks, but none would stayBehind their king to help him in the fray.
- E10.9.29They turned their backs and left their king alone,Ringed round by horsemen, fighting on his own.
- E10.9.30When Mahwi fled, the Shah knew treason’s art,And saw the secret plot in every part.
