Gav Spares His Stranded Brother
From E2.3, Gav, Talkhand, and Chess. It illustrates E2.3.336–347 (to E2.3.348):
- E2.3.336Thus till the sun had left the sky the strifeSurpassed all bounds and drained the field of life.
- E2.3.337Then from the field a shout from Gav was heard,And all the combatants received his word:
- E2.3.338“You warriors, take no revenge todayOn those who seek safe quarter in the fray.
- E2.3.339Know that my brother now has turned away,And left alone, cannot abide this day.”
- E2.3.340Then many chiefs asked quarter; many moreWere slaughtered on the field in streams of gore.
- E2.3.341Talkhand’s whole army scattered in dismay,Their shepherd gone, their broken ranks gave way.
- E2.3.342When young Talkhand was stranded and bereft,Upon his elephant, with no one left,
- E2.3.343Gav called, “My brother, leave this battlefield;Go home, where palace walls can be your shield.
- E2.3.344By truth, you shall not suffer harm from me,Nor from my men, if you from battle flee.
- E2.3.345Give thanks to God, the source of all good things,For life preserved amid the strife of kings.
- E2.3.346But this is not the time for long advice;Go now, before new blood demands its price.”
- E2.3.347When young Talkhand had heard his brother’s word,He writhed with shame, and all his soul was stirred.
