Bahram Drinks from the Old Woman's Gourd
From E6.27, Bahram Escapes to the Khan of Chin. It illustrates E6.27.13–24 (to E6.27.29):
- E6.27.13When thirst had parched their mouths, they sought and foundAn aging woman’s house on humble ground.
- E6.27.14In courteous words they asked for drink and bread; She brought an ancient sieve and on it spread
- E6.27.15A piece of waterskin, and on it laidThe barley bread, a humble meal she made.
- E6.27.16Yalan-sina gave barsom for the prayer;Bahram forgot the words in his despair.
- E6.27.17They ate, then asked for wine to crown the board; The woman said she had a little hoard.
- E6.27.18“I have an ancient gourd, its top cut through;I made a cup and set it here for you.”
- E6.27.19Bahram replied, “Then fill that rustic cup;No finer vessel could be lifted up.”
- E6.27.20She fetched the wine; he drank and was content,And to the crone a brimming portion sent.
- E6.27.21“Take cheer too, gracious mother; tell me, say,What tidings move the world about today?”
- E6.27.22“My brain is worn,” she said, “from all I hear;Today men came from town; their news was clear.
- E6.27.23They said Bahram’s troops joined the Shah instead;Their chief escaped without them when he fled.”
- E6.27.24He asked, “Did Bahram act as wisdom taught,Or choose the pleasure his desires had sought?”
