The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

P109.L01

Perhaps for the sake of this very harlot he had arranged it so that I would be forced to marry her.

P109.L02

Although we were milk-brother and milk-sister, so that their honor would not be lost I was obliged to take her as my wife.

P109.L03

Because this girl was not a virgin. This too I did not know. In fact I was never able to know. They had merely conveyed it to me.

P109.L04

On the wedding night, when we were left alone in the room, however much I begged and pleaded, it had no effect on her and she did not undress.

P109.L05

She said, “I am unclean for prayer.” She did not let me near her at all. She extinguished the lamp and went and slept on the far side of the room.

P109.L06

She trembled like a willow, as though they had thrown her into a dungeon with a dragon.

P109.L07

No one would believe it; indeed, it is not believable. She would not let me take a single kiss from her cheeks.

P109.L08

The second night too I went to the same place as the first night and slept on the floor; and the following nights were likewise, I did not dare.

P110.L01

In the end, a long time passed during which I slept on the floor on the far side of the room.

P110.L02

Who would believe it? Two months—no, two months and four days—I slept on the floor away from her and did not dare go near her.

P110.L03

She had previously prepared that meaningful handkerchief and had put pigeon blood on it.

P110.L04

I do not know! Perhaps it was the very handkerchief she had kept from her first night of lovemaking in order to mock me all the more.

P110.L05

Then everyone congratulated me. They winked at one another, and no doubt said in their hearts, “The fellow took the fortress last night”; and I let nothing show.

P110.L06

They laughed at me, they laughed at my foolishness. I had promised myself that one day I would write all of this down.

P110.L07

After I found out that she had lovers by the pair and by the one—and perhaps because the mullah had recited a few words of Arabic and placed her under my authority—she disliked me! Perhaps she wanted to be free!

P110.L08

Finally one night I decided to go beside her by force. I carried out my decision.

P110.L09

But after a fierce struggle she got up and left; and I contented myself that night with sleeping and rolling about in her bed, into which the warmth of her body had penetrated and which smelled of her.

P110.L10

The only comfortable sleep I had was that night. From that night onward she separated her room from mine.
