Day by day I wasted away; when I looked at myself in the mirror, my cheeks had become red, the color of meat before a butcher’s shop.

My body was full of heat and my eyes had assumed a languid and sorrowful expression.

He took pride in having given a sexual-strengthening medicine to my grandfather, poured flixweed seed and sugar candy down my throat, and tied cassia to my aunt’s navel.

At any rate, as soon as he came he sat by my pillow, took my pulse, and examined my tongue,

He also handed my nurse several long prescriptions consisting of strange decoctions and oils, such as hyssop, olive, licorice extract, camphor, maidenhair fern, chamomile oil, goose fat, flaxseed, pine seed, and other rubbish.
